Discover and Test our APIs |Network API Challenge

Orange is on a mission to become a leader in the network API ecosystem.
Orange Fab and 5G Lab together invite you to join the Network API Challenge — a unique innovation opportunity where you can test real APIs and explore new integrations.

What is a Network API?

APIs are something most people use every day without even realizing it: when they work, they’re invisible, but if they disappeared, everyone would notice.

APIs, or Application Programming Interfaces, are a set of rules that allow software programs to communicate with each other regardless of their manufacturers, architectures, or programming languages.

Network APIs - is APIs for a network i.e., a group of connected devices that can communicate with each other. Network APIs provide developers with a standardized, simplified way to integrate 5G services and capabilities into their applications.

How does it work? Through API one application can request data or services from another: the API receives the request, gets the data from its system, and sends back the result. This makes APIs essential for developers, as they allow them to integrate features (payments, geolocation, etc.) in their applications without building everything from scratch.

We’re opening APIs for you — test, build, and discover the opportunities in the Network API Challenge!

Network API Challenge

The challenge is aimed to give an opportunity for Romanian startups and app developers to test 7 Network APIs developed by Orange and available in 5G Lab in Bucharest and Iași. We invite you to share your creativity, to co-innovate with us, and to define together a new wave of promising future-changing API-based ideas! Join us on an informative kick-off webinar on 25th of September at 15:00 EST where we will share more information and answer all your questions!

Which APIs can I test?

We are providing an access to 7 Network APIs developed under CAMARA open-source project

  • SIM Swap – know if a SIM card has been changed in a terminal recently, helping to detect fraud and to protect logins or transactions.
  • KYC (Know Your Customer) Match – confirm a user's identity by matching their details with verified mobile operator data, helping reduce identity thefts.
  • Geofencing – detect when a device enters or leaves a specific area, sending instant alerts to enable real-time tracking and safety actions.
  • Device Location Verification – confirm if a device is inside or outside a specific area for location-based services.
  • Device Reachability Status – check if a mobile device is currently connected to the network (via data, SMS, or not at all).
  • Quality on Demand – temporarily boost network performance (bandwidth/latency) for specific app tasks, ensuring seamless user experiences during high-demand scenarios like streaming or gaming.
  • Population Density Data – see how crowded a place is using anonymized mobile network data, improving planning and targeting for marketing, transportation, and urban development.

How can I test APIs?

We are offering a Playground and a Sandbox as environments for you to explore our APIs

  • API Playground (quick start) - provides developers with an interactive environment to explore, test, and integrate software API seamlessly without the overhead of using a real network.
  • Sandbox (advanced) - gives developers access to a dedicated 5GSA testing environment that mirrors real-world conditions — helping validate use cases, speed up development, and boost confidence before moving to production.

Get inspired from the Use Cases below

SIM Swap

Fraud Prevention

Helps to prevent account takeover fraud by detecting recent changes to a user's SIM card. By identifying suspicious SIM activity, it strengthens mobile-based authentication and enables proactive fraud detection.

Fraud Prevention in Banking: strange behaviors or accumulation of SIM Swap notifications may help banks detect fraud scenarios in advance.

Fraud Prevention Through Password Resets: a recent SIM swap may indicate a risk of account takeover fraud and the service provider can adapt the security measures accordingly.

KYC Match

Fraud Prevention

Allows service providers to verify a user’s identity by comparing submitted data with trusted information from their mobile operator.

Identity theft risks : as online transactions rise, personal information becomes dispersed across various digital platforms. Implementing strong cybersecurity measures is essential to combat synthetic identity fraud and phishing. The KYC-Match API enables validation of customer-provided contact information against trustworthy data from mobile network operators, facilitating convenient digital onboarding while minimizing identity fraud risks.

Geofencing

Location Services

Allows developers to create applications that can detect when mobile devices enter or leave predefined geographical areas, offering immediate notifications and enabling a wide range of location-based services.

Security : Monitor assets or individuals within a secure area and alert authorities immediately if the geofence is breached.
Fleet Management: track vehicles to ensure they follow prescribed routes, receiving alerts if they deviate or enter restricted areas.
Child or Pet Safety: set up geofences around home or school to get instant notifications when a child or pet enters or leaves these zones.
Drone Operations: prevent drones from flying into restricted airspace or other no-fly zones, ensuring safe and compliant operations.

Population Density Data

Network Insights

Allows to access real-time or forecasted crowd levels in specific areas to support smarter planning, marketing, and emergency response decisions.

Urban Planning and Infrastructure Development: city planners analyze population distribution patterns to identify areas needing infrastructure improvements, such as public transportation and healthcare facilities.
Event Management and Crowd Control : event organizers estimate crowd sizes and plan logistics, including security and resource allocation.
Data-Driven Marketing Campaigns: marketing teams target high population density areas to maximize campaign impact and conversion rates.
Disaster Management: emergency responders distribute resources based on population density, ensuring areas with the highest need are prioritized.
Drone Route Optimization: drone operators identify high-risk zones and optimal flight times to ensure safer delivery routes, especially in densely populated areas.

Quality on Demand

Network Quality

Allows to request a boost in network performance — perfect for ensuring smooth user experience during video calls, streaming, or high-priority transactions.

Automotive Transport: vehicle connectivity.
Entertainment and Media: streaming, cloud gaming, routing, content delivery with AI.
Industry: process safety, remote maintanance, IoT.
E-commerce: imporve purchase conversion rate.
Information and communication technologies: meetings, conferences in mobility, remote surgery, remote training.

Device Location Verification

Location Services

Implements precise location-based services, confirming if a device is within a specified geographical area.

E-commerce fraud detection: verify if a customer’s device is in an expected location to prevent suspicious transactions.
Ride-sharing location confirmation: confirm the user’s real-time location to improve pick-up accuracy and safety.
Targeted marketing: trigger promotions when a customer enters a specific location, like a store or mall.
Travel booking validation: ensure the device is within the booked area to reduce misuse and enhance trust.

Device Reachability Status

Location Services

The CAMARA Device Reachability Status API allows to query the connectivity status of a mobile device (data connected, SMS connected or not connected).

Emergency services: an emergency application queries the reachability status of a critical response team member. If the device is reachable via SMS, the system triggers an SMS alert, ensuring that the responder receives the message despite possible data connectivity issues.
Customer support platforms: a customer support platform checks the reachability of customers through SMS before attempting to send a message or support ticket. If the device is reachable via SMS but not data, they ensure that only SMS-based communication is attempted.
IoT devices: a fleet management system queries the reachability status of IoT devices in vehicles. If a device is reachable via data, the system can proceed with real-time monitoring. If it’s reachable only via SMS, the system may reduce the frequency of data updates or switch to less data-intensive communication methods.
